In the world of the web, you must have a web
server that is fast, reliable and extensible. Of all the ones that we
have seen, only four make the grade with us. In addition to links on
each of the web servers the Netcraft Web Server Survey (http://www.netcraft.com/survey/)
shows who is using what on the Internet.
General
All web servers support HTTP the base protocol of the web. But now,
most servers will also support a myriad of other technologies including,
SSL, XML, servlets, proxy servers, caching servers
and finally a newer version of HTTP.

Servers
The Apache web server is fast, extensible (you get the source!), and
very stable. For Unix platforms, consider this one carefully.
Microsoft is inching higher and higher on the stats of which web
servers are being used on the net. There are good reasons for this. IIS
has a variety of features at a cost of mandating the use of NT.
Last but not least is Netscape. The folks came over from NCSA and
started a company that has shaped the Internet. Thier products are
solid, but thier competition is also.
There are a variety of other web servers on the market, but these are
the three that we think are solid and will be around for a while.
